Welcome to Black Oak Wood Co, a family-run business rooted in the rich traditions of craftsmanship and quality. We are based in the picturesque town of Saffron Walden, Essex, but our journey began much earlier in Chingford, London where our passion for woodworking and bespoke design was ignited.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Our story starts with three generations of artisans. As a child, I, Mark, was always by the side of my grandad, Reginald “Reg,” and my dad, Robert “Rob.” My grandad was not only a skilled carpenter but also a master safe maker and an artist painting portraits. From him, I learned the timeless techniques of woodworking and the value of precision. My dad, a talented tool maker and high-end plumber, taught me the importance of attention to detail, especially when working on luxurious projects in the heart of London.
By the age of 16, I had left school and was already on-site, working with a building firm on house extensions, loft conversions, and all aspects of construction. These early experiences laid the foundation for what would later become Black Oak Wood Co, where our passion for creating beautiful, bespoke spaces truly took form.
From Passion to Profession
In 2021, we officially established Black Oak Wood Co, driven by our love for carpentry and a commitment to delivering exceptional quality. We specialise in crafting bespoke garden rooms and custom saunas, each project meticulously designed and built to the highest standards. One of our signature techniques is the ancient Japanese art of Yakisugi, where we char wood to create stunning, durable cladding that stands out in both beauty and resilience.
